Congress didn't prove itself trustworthy in the '70s when they defunded the Vietnamese Army after the US departure. We had promised VietNam we would fund their military actions until the defeat of the Communists.

The ARVN was doing very well after the American involvement and the Democratically controlled Congress shutoff all support without which the South could no longer resist the China/Russia funded North.

Unfortunately, one of the lessons learned from VietNam is that those Democrats in Congress then and still in Congress today along with fellow party members of the same rabid anti-war bent (except war precipitated by Democrat Presidents named Clinton) cannot be trusted to support freedom abroad or at home.

I supported the Clinton effort in former Yugoslavia and Somalia. His failure to order the missile hit on bin Laden was unfortunate, but it was a decision made by a President with data I did not have.

Congress needs to take back the power to make war and levy peace. That is what the founders wrote 220+ years ago and it's still a good idea.Indigo Redhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17906787350123925867noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-12392119.post-1134782271924635322005-12-16T17:17:00.000-08:002005-12-16T17:17:00.000-08:00The Iraqis had about double the usual US voter tur...The Iraqis had about double the usual US voter turnout...

And yes, Murtha, go to Hell, and take your Purple Hearts with you! And your Bronze Star! And your Navy Distinguished Service Medal!

Real heroes get deferments, not medals...except for Clinton.

::waiting for the dogpile::

In all seriousness though, your implication that Democrats want Iraqi citizens to suffer sort of cheapens the debate. You're free to disagree with Murtha's opinions, but please keep in mind he has been in a situation that, while maybe not analogous to Iraq, does share some similarities to it, and he thinks he learned some lessons that we might want to keep in mind.

Maybe a lot of the disagreement going on in the politics of our nation might be because we, as a country, really didn't give this situation the debate it merited. Maybe in the future we will leave decisions of war to Congress...but I doubt it.

I supported Operation Iraqi Freedom on the basis of what the name implies. The UNs sactions were really not working, and we, as a free people, I think have the obligation to end oppression when we have the opportunity.

Murtha feels that his plan, end the long run, will hasten Iraqi democracy while minimizing loss of American lives. He may be wrong here, but remember, in a healthy democracy, dissent and debate are a good thing.Isaac Carmichaelhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17402890244648619420noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-12392119.post-1134732518106226782005-12-16T03:28:00.000-08:002005-12-16T03:28:00.000-08:00OK Indigo enough pussyfooting around. No matter how much good is accomplished there are always going to be some who are only interested in their personal politics. They can go to hell indeed.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
