We're All Gonna Die! ...Again

Entering college in 1972, I was thrown into a world of intense fear. Forced to read Paul Erlich's 'The Population Bomb' and Alvin Toffler's 'Future Shock,' I was convinced I would never survive to be 56 years old. TIME, Newsweek, and US New and World Report magazines all had a cover stories of the coming ice age as the Global Cooling fad took hold of usually reasonable sensibilities. We were doomed everyone was saying and it was all backed by solid science, just like Al Gore's 'Inconvenient Truth.'

Matt Novak of PaleoFuture blog returns to those days of future past with the video 'Apocalypse'.
I was scared to premature death. Then, while researching my term paper, I read an essay by Isaac Asimov in which he demonstrated that every person alive at the time could be fit comfortably into the Grand Canyon and, by using the numbers of the doomsayers, that the total mass of humanity would exceed the total mass of planet Earth in the same 20-30 year time frame predicted for our doom.

Ed Driscoll has more to say at Pajamas Media and he says it better, too.

We Have a Law for That, This is California Damn it!

California gained 725 new laws this morning, all of them signed by outgoing Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger(R). Marijuana is now legal (SB1449), trans-fats are not (AB97).

New rule: never bake marijuana brownies with Crisco.

Of the 725 new laws, there's one I like. Informally known as Chelsea's Law, AB 1844, introduced by Assemblyman Nathan Fletcher(R-Costa Mesa), increases penalties, parole provisions and oversight of sex offenders, including a "one-strike, life-without-parole penalty" for some offenders. If that's not unbelievabe enough, the Democrat majority Assembly and Senate voted for this law.
