Today Obama said, "I don't know if you've noticed, but nobody's been paying much attention to health care."
Excuse me! That was the point!
Obama's press conferences are well scripted from seating arrangement to who asks questions to what questions will be asked. The question about Obama's friend, Prof Henry Gates Jr, was the last question of the night. The presser was supposed to be about Obama's controversial health care plan and the bills moving through Congress. And it was - until that last non-sequiter question from left field about a guy being arrested for disorderly conduct.
Obama says his words were ill considered. He paused long enough to have written the first act of "Hamlet, Prince of Denmark" before saying the police "acted stupidly." He's a lawyer; lawyers don't make stupid mistakes like that. Obama knew very well his comment should have been "No comment", but that would not have got the desired result, which was, "...nobody's been paying much attention to health care."
He also knows the House Democrats don't have the votes to pass H.R. 3200 and that Pelosi won't bring the bill to a floor vote before August. A head fake from a losing position was Obama's only move. How did Gov Sarah Palin put it? Oh, yeah -
"Let me go back quickly to a comfortable analogy for me, and that’s sports. Basketball. And I use it because you are naïve if you don’t see a full court press from the national level picking away right now. A good point guard, here’s what she does. She drives through a full court press, protecting the ball, keeping her head up because she needs to keep her eye on the basket and she knows exactly when to pass the ball so that the team can win. And that is what I’m doing. Keeping our eye on the ball."No matter how the Democrats or Obama charge the net, the health care reform package is still a game loser. Americans of all parties distrust health care reform as proposed and will not accept anything that smacks of Socialism no matter how many head fakes or fake heads are employed.
