There's a turbine farm near San Francisco that kills hundreds of birds every year. The flying birds are struck down by the turbine blades.
My guess is a lubrication failure - just can't get along without that oil, can we?
Most likely, Tom. Lubricants are dirt and dust magnets. Without regular cleaning, I suspect the fan go-round parts get clogged. Oil and grease still are needed, no doubt about it.
YIKES! I wouldn't want one of those on my roof!
