Further Adventures of Indigo Red

Hear me now oh thou bleak and unbearable world Thou art base and debauched as can be And a knight with his banners all bravely unfurled Now hurls down his gauntlet to thee! I am I, Don Quixote, the Lord of La Mancha Destroyer of Evil am I, I will march to the sound of the trumpets of glory Forever to conquer or die Hear me heathens and wizards and serpents of sin All your dastardly doings are past For a holy endeavor is now to begin And virtue shall triumph at last!

Natural Born or C-Section

A random observation by Thomas Sowell in today's Investor's Business Daily:

Upon learning that the Constitution requires a president to be a natural-born citizen, a college student said: "What makes a natural-born citizen any more qualified than one born by C-section?"
Can't decide if this student is really dumb or really smart as this is a question I have asked.

Personally, I think it's a pretty cute question - I makes one stop and think for a second.

But we're still waiting for an official birth certificate.

I wish it was a cute question but when I see today's graduates I fear it was just dumb.

And what about those that are hatched? Aren't all people equal before the law?

I don't know about those that are hatched, but after the law, we certainly aren't equal.

Good point. But after the law, which ones are more equal? And what standing to cyborgs have? And test tube babies? And clones?

After law superequality applies to the wealthy, famous, and talented as demonstrated by the cases of Ted Kennedy, OJ Simpson, and Roman Polanski.

As yet, cyborgs (Borg) have no standing as AIs don't exist with an a awareness of self. That will be a question dealt with too late.

What rights should baby test tubes have? Maybe when they are fully grown Danish-Kuderna flasks we can think about some rights, but until then....

Okay, that was a joke. Test tubers already exist and lead normal lives w/all the rights and privileges of wombers. However, those created from scratch by artificial recombinant DNA procedures may have a legal problem immediately, but will be recognized as full-fledged persons by courts and society quickly.

Clones still have a hefty 'ick' factor and will take a bit longer to acquire equal status. Many people are already benumbed by animal cloning to the point that the soon announced first human clone will be a page 8 story.

Mostly, I think people are overwhelmed by the amassed data of modern life they don't want to even think of the possibilities anymore. When Obama once again legalized partial-birth abortion, hardly a sound was made in protest. Folks have just been worn down by the banal bromides of modern leaders and experts into just giving up.

As I recall, that was the key point in Macbeth...
Don't remember the specifics, but Macbeth was told that no man born of woman could defeat him. Whoever he marched against, however, was born by C-section - a maternally fatal operation in those days, I believe - and therefore not included among the "born of woman" category.

Shakespeare had a bit of the lawyer in him...always splitting hairs to get a new twist in the plot!

Thank you, suek. I seem to remember that, too, from a long time ago. Until the second half of the 20th century, C-section was fatal more than not, usually death was from infection or blood loss. Amazing anyone survived at all.
