Russian Sub Accident, Over Twenty Dead

Photo: Russian nuclear submarine Vepr in 2004

An accident aboard the Russian nuclear submarine Nerpa killed more than twenty people and injured twenty-one Saturday. The sub was on a test run in the Sea of Japan when, for unknown reasons, the fire extinguishing system activated in the bow of the boat. Russian sub fire suppression systems usually utilize foam and chemical suppressants. There were 208 people aboard 81 of whom were servicemen. Submariners and ship builders were killed, the Associated Press reports.

Anonymous Russian fleet officials said the fire occurred in the bow far away from the nuclear reactor located amidships. The newly built boat began tests a month ago and had her maiden submersion last week.

The Nerpa is heading back to the Amur Shipbuilding Factory under it's own power accompanied by a rescue vessel. The 21 injured have been evacuated to Vladivostok aboard the destroyer Admiral Tributs.

This is the third serious naval accident for the newly rebuilt Russian fleet since the Kursk was lost. The Kursk sinking in 2000 resulted from the premature detonation of a hydrogen peroxide powered torpedo while being prepared for launch. The initial explosion caused secondary explosions within two minutes. All hands, 118 souls, perished after several days of rescue attempts. In 2003, eleven people died on a sub being taken out of service sank in the Barents Sea.

The loss of the Kursk and crew was a major blow to the new President of Russia, Vladimir Putin, who was in his first year of his first term. Russia's inability to rescue the crew and Putin's unwillingness to accept US aid cost the lives of the men who survived the explosion. The international television coverage was hugely embarrassing to the young leader.

Saturday's incident comes just when the Russian navy is trying to restore it's reputation and demonstrate it's military prowess. This month Russia is to hold joint naval exercises with Venezuela on the doorstep of the U.S., thumbing their nose at America's Monroe Doctrine.

Diatha Harris Says John McCain at Fault

Mush as Flip Wilson's Geraldine Jones blamed her behavior on the Devil, the Leftist teacher, Diatha D. Harris, is now explaining away her rude, crude, and contemptible behavior toward her McCain supporting fifth grade math students by blaming John McCain and his supporters.

A Swedish documentary film crew caught Harris exclaiming "Ohhh, Jesus" when a few of the fifth graders declared their support for John McCain. In a late Thursday interview, Harris said the clip had been "doctored" and blamed the whole brouhaha on disgruntled McCain supporters unhappy by their loss. She claimed in the interview that somebody had edited out the gestures she made when students expressed Obama support which she claims makes her appear to be an Obama partisan. Harris said, "It has been doctored. They didn’t show anything about Obama." Near the end of the video, Harris is shown at a school rally wearing an Obama button. Nope, not partisan at all.

The Fayetteville Observer reports -

Harris said she received no complaints about the political nature of the classroom dialogue until a reporter called her Thursday night. She blamed the controversy on McCain supporters still smarting from their defeat this week.

"If John McCain had won, nothing would be said about this video, doctored or undoctored," said Harris, who is a registered Democrat.
(...)

Harris said said she normally wouldn’t discuss politics in a math class, but the TV crew asked her to engage the children in the political dialogue. The teacher said she knew the crew members from an award-winning documentary that they did on American politics in 1992. In that production, Harris said she is featured because she hosted former President George H.W. Bush and his wife for lunch at her home, which was then in Asheville.
The Finnish blog, Tundra Tabloids, was the first to make the video public and they have much more coverage.

UPDATE:

Rebekah Sanderlin, the Fayetteville Observer Operation Marriage blogger has posted today "This is appalling". The comments are overwhelmingly that Harris was very wrong in her actions, that she is a politically aware person having hosted GHW Bush a few years ago, she knew full well what she was saying and the harm it could do to the little girl, and the teacher should be dismissed immediately.

Diatha Harris, Leftist Teacher Browbeats Soldier's Child

This is the connection between Senator Barack Obama and William Ayers that should have been made by the McCain campaign. William Ayers is a professor of education in Chicago, has written several books on elementary school eduction and social justice.

In his book, Teaching toward Freedom, "William Ayers illuminates the hope as well as the conflict that characterizes the craft of education: how it can be used in authoritarian ways at the service of the state, the church, or a restrictive existing social order-or, as he envisions it, as a way for students to become more fully human, more engaged, more participatory, more free."

One of the "authoritarian ways" is demonstrated by Diatha D. Harris in a Swedish television documentary. The fifth grade teacher, Ms. Harris, asks the class who they support for President, Obama or McCain. One young girl has a parent in the military supporting McCain, she tell the teacher, so she, too, supports McCain. Ms. Harris then proceeds browbeat the little girl almost to tears. Stunned, the fifth grader just sits and stares in bewilderment at what has just happened to her.

The ONLY media outlet for this story has been the original source, The Fayetteville Observer, numerous blogs, and talk radio. So far, the story has been ignored by networks and syndicates.

Teacher's comments about McCain, war stir anger
By Francis X. Gilpin
Staff writer

A Cumberland County school teacher is defending her comments to a fifth-grade pupil who expressed support for John McCain in her class last spring.

The exchange at Mary McArthur Elementary School was captured by a Swedish television documentary crew, and the video is making the rounds on the Internet including YouTube.

In the video, which reportedly aired in Scandinavia earlier this week, teacher Diatha D. Harris calls the Iraq War “senseless” and tells one student whose father is a soldier that McCain would keep troops there for 100 years. She said in an interview that her comments were doctored.

Superintendent Bill Harrison called that student’s father today and apologized, a spokeswoman said. He also issued a statement saying he was “shocked” by the video and “particularly disturbed” by how the teacher’s “inappropriate actions” made the children uncomfortable.

The videotaped discussion begins with Harris asking the class who they support for president. When two students say McCain, she responds with “Oh Lord” and “Oh Jesus.”

She asks them why they are you pulling for McCain or Obama. One student says she supports Obama because “he is making good changes” like “not having a fight between Iraq, and having soldiers killed.”

“So in other words,” Harris says, “Barack is going to end that war in Iraq.”

One girls says she supports McCain. When asked why, she tells her teacher, “I think it’s because of my parents are going for him, too.’’

Harris points out that the girl’s father is in the military, then says to the class that Iraq is a “senseless war.”

“And by the way,” Harris tells the girl, “the person that you’re picking for president said that our troops could stay in Iraq for another hundred years if they need to. So that means that your daddy could stay in the military for another hundred years.”

The girl appears to be embarrassed and doesn’t respond.

Harris said three children in the class had parents in the military.

In an interview late Thursday, Harris, 53, said somebody edited the video to make it appear she was an Obama partisan imposing her views on a child. In fact, Harris said, she made gestures after pupils voiced support for Obama.

“It has been doctored,” Harris said. “They didn’t show anything about Obama.”

In another sequence on the video, however, Harris sports an Obama button during a pep rally at the school.

Harrison, the superintendent, said in the statement that neutral discussion of the political process is appropriate. But, he added, “at no time, particularly with elementary students, should a teacher infuse his/her political views into the discussion. Most disconcerting was the military slant that made its way into this discussion. We are a military community, serving over 15,000 military students and their families. We value the sacrifices, not only of the military parents but also those of their families.”

The statement, posted on the school system’s Web site, assured the public that “the actions exhibited in this video are not consistent with the vision” of the school system.

“Once the video was brought to my attention, I immediately launched an investigation. ... I can assure you that upon completion of the investigation, I will take appropriate action.”

Wanda McPhaul, a spokeswoman for Cumberland schools, said school leaders were deluged with protest calls today. She said state law prohibits them from revealing what, if any, personnel action would be taken against Harris. The personnel records that officials did release show Harris has taught school for 27 years, the last four in county schools.

McPhaul said the father of the girl in the video is active-duty military and didn’t know about the video until Harrison called him today.

One of the first Web sites to report the video was a blog called Tundra Tabloid.

Initially, bloggers said Harris was a teacher in Asheville. She used to be a teacher in western North Carolina, but moved to Fayetteville within the past couple years.
Dr. William Harrison, Superintendent of Schools issued the following statement and a video response on the district website --

CCS Headline News - Superintendent's Response to YouTube

I was shocked when I saw the clip of an interaction between a Cumberland County Schools teacher and her students as posted on YouTube. While neutral discussion of the political process is appropriate, at no time, particularly with elementary students, should a teacher infuse his/her political views into the discussion. Most disconcerting was the military slant that made its way into this discussion. We are a military community, serving over 15,000 military students and their families. We value the sacrifices, not only of the military parents but also those of their families.

We believe that military children are our children, military spouses are many of our employees, and military service men and women are our heroes. We proudly serve our military children and have received national awards for our support of military families.

I was particularly disturbed to see the uncomfortable position in which our children were placed due to the inappropriate actions of one of our teachers. Please be assured that the actions exhibited in this video are not consistent with the vision of the CCS. Moreover, the actions of one teacher do not represent the 7000 employees in our organization.

Once the video was brought to my attention, I immediately launched an investigation. Personnel laws prevent me from releasing information regarding individual employees and personnel action taken. I can assure you that upon completion of the investigation, I will take appropriate action.

Dr. William Harrison
CCS' Superintendent
I believe Dr. Harrison when he says the views of Diatha Harris do not reflect the views of the Districts many teachers and other employees. But, her views are also not unique in our schools and haven't been for many years. The dozens of blogs that have already reported this story are replete with personal anecdotes from commenters who have had similar experiences themselves or through their children. All of them write that they did nothing because they thought their experience was an isolated event.

The Left is in control of our educational system, the textbooks written and used, and curricula from daycare to pre-school, from kindergarten to university. It take a bare 15 years to indoctrinate an entire generation and the Leftist have had 30+ years to do their damage. The student protesters of the 1960s are the retiring and senior Master Teachers of today and their third generation of Marxists are in elementary schools now.

Regaining control of our country depends on regaining control of the schools. Every event like the one shown here must be confronted and exposed. Contact the Principal, the District Superintendent, the local School Board, the local press, the PTA, tell other parents, shout it from every hill and mountain top. Do not let this continue.

In this case, contact Principal Lola B. Williams at Mary MacArthur Elementary School, 3809 Village Drive Fayetteville, NC 28304, (910)424-2206, and School Superintendent William C. Harrison at (910)678-2300, Fax: 910-678-2339, 2465 Gillespie Street Fayetteville, NC 28306. Very politely, but firmly, let them know what you think should be done with teachers who are more interested in indoctrination over teaching.

Obama Briefed on National Security

President-elect Obama began a series of top secret intelligence briefings in Chicago today. The FBI and 21 other intel agencies will be regularly briefing Obama on the daily state of the world over the next 70+ days. President Bush will personally talk with the President-elect on Monday to discuss Iraq, the world financial crisis, and the current state of the nation.

In addition to receiving the regular “President’s Daily Brief,” or PDB, which consists of analytical summaries of best available intelligence on vital national security matters over the previous 24-hours, intelligence sources said Obama’s briefing also included the latest analysis on the reconstitution of Al Qaeda and the terrorist organisation’s presence in Pakistan and Pakistan’s border with Afghanistan, the state of the terrorist/insurgency in Iraq and Pakistan, Al-Qaeda’s efforts to acquire nuclear and, especially, biological weapons, Iran and North Korea’s nuclear weapons and ballistic missile developments; and the increasing threat posed to the United States by Mexico’s warring narco-terrorist cartels, which have ties to Colombia’s FARC and Islamist terrorist organizations with long-established operational infrastructure throughout Central and South America.

Given the public state of the world then briefed on the secret state of the world, Barack Obama may be the first President-elect to demand a recount.

Jesse Jackson stood with over 200,000 people in Chicago's Grant Park Tuesday night. He and they were there were gathered to hear the victory speech of President-elect Barack Obama. After a 300 year history of slavery, brutality, dehumanization, discrimination, and bigotry it was a night of well deserved victory. And to my mind, long overdue.

Jackson explained today that his tears were in remembrance of those Black leaders who did not survive to see this momentous day. But given the particular history of Jesse Jackson who has made an industry of race baiting, racial intimidation, corporate shakedowns, and modern industrial highway robbery I am dubious of his explanation.

The Reverend Jesse Jackson could truly be thinking -
"Damn, I'm proud of this young Black man, Barack Obama."
Or, he could be thinking -
"Damn! I can't blame whitey any longer."
Or, maybe -
"Damn! I'm out of a job!"
There is an outside chance Jackson was thinking all three. Perhaps many more Blacks in the Race Industry were thinking the same. It would be a good thing, I think.

Trial Lawyers to Scrap Tort Reform

Tort reform. Forget about it. Trial lawyers are poised to strike at the entire ledger limiting lawsuits and awards. They see in Barack Obama a very big meal ticket.

Plaintiff and consumer groups, buoyed by prospects of a Democratic president and expanded Democratic majority in Congress, are preparing a big push for legislation that would roll back limitations on personal-injury and class-action lawsuits.

The plaintiffs bar's legislative wish-list includes limiting companies' use of federal regulations as a shield from litigation under state law, and laws to end mandatory arbitration in consumer contracts, opening potential new avenues for civil lawsuits.
(...)

The legal industry's fund raising for Democratic candidates and political action committees is on pace to exceed the $137 million raised in 2004, as pro-plaintiff groups see a rare political opportunity. "We've been back on our end of the field for too long," said Ed Mierzwinksi of U.S. PIRG, a consumer-advocacy group. "Now we do have a chance to throw deep."
(...)

That has unnerved "tort-reform" advocates, who have sought limits on civil litigation.

"The impending election portends a perfect storm that will engulf business interests," said Lester Brickman, a law professor at the Benjamin N. Cardozo School of Law at Yeshiva University in New York. He warned of the "most significant enlargement of tort liability since the 1960s."
(...)

Plaintiffs groups have also been quietly building their case against the use of mandatory-arbitration clauses in consumer contracts. Over the past decade, credit cards, technology and telecom companies have increasingly required customers to waive rights to jury trials and class-action suits. Democrats have tried to eliminate the clauses in everything from nursing-home contracts to meatpacker-company agreements. "The trial lawyers used the last Congress to learn where the soft spots were," said Mr. Schwartz, the tort-reform advocate.

Law firms and lawyers gave $181 million to Democratic and Republican candidates in the current election cycle through Oct. 19, according to the Center for Responsible Politics, putting it on pace to surpass the $183 million donated in 2004 and up from $120 million in 2006. About 75% of all donations in the current cycle have gone to Democrats. The AAJ, the largest single contributor, has given $2.5 million to candidates, with about 95% going to Democrats.

Sen. Obama has raised $28 million from the industry, compared to Sen. McCain's $9 million.

Obama Plans Electricity Rate Increase

In the same January 2008 San Francisco Chronicle interview in which he said he would bankrupt the coal industry, Barack Obama said that "electricity rates would necessarily skyrocket" under his plan.

The following audioclip transcript courtesy of Mike's America from whom I snagged this piece:

"Under my plan of a cap and trade system, electricity rates would necessarily skyrocket. Even regardless of what I say about whether coal is good or bad. Because I’m capping greenhouse gases, coal power plants, you know, natural gas, you name it — whatever the plants were, whatever the industry was, uh, they would have to retrofit their operations. That will cost money. They will pass that money on to consumers."

Obama Intends to Bankrupt Coal Industry

Barack Obama told the friendly San Francisco Chronicle in a January 17, 2008 interview that he would bankrupt the US coal industry rather than have more coal fired plants built here. It's important to know that US coal reserves are among the largest in the world, America is essentially the Saudi Arabia of coal. Obama and Biden would squander that alternative fuel for making electricity by imposing onerous regulations that would shut down the current coal fired power plant industry and prevent any new plants from being built.

Let me sort of describe my overall policy.

What I've said is that we would put a cap and trade system in place that is as aggressive, if not more aggressive, than anybody else's out there.

I was the first to call for a 100% auction on the cap and trade system, which means that every unit of carbon or greenhouse gases emitted would be charged to the polluter. That will create a market in which whatever technologies are out there that are being presented, whatever power plants that are being built, that they would have to meet the rigors of that market and the ratcheted down caps that are being placed, imposed every year.

So if somebody wants to build a coal-powered plant, they can; it's just that it will bankrupt them because they're going to be charged a huge sum for all that greenhouse gas that's being emitted.

Intentionally bankrupting the coal industry, the lowering of the taxable income threshold, the reneging on the promise to use public campaign financing, the arguing in favor of killing live birth abortions, the countenancing of extreme late term abortions - the history of Obama's dishonesty and list of lies just goes and on and on and on.

His Momma and Grandmomma raised a fool.

UPDATE:

Gov. Sarah Palin responded today in Ohio, coal country, to Obama's promise to bankrupt the US coal industry.
