US Blogger Charged in Foreign Court

US citizen, Gopalan Nair, Singapore Dissident blogger, has been charged with insulting a Singapore judge. Mr. Nair is a Singapore native and lawyer who "stood elections 1988 and 1991 in Singapore, was harassed and persecuted by Lee Kuan Yew for my political beliefs, left for USA, obtained asylum and admitted California State Bar, practice law ever since in Fremont California near San Francisco." He gave up Singapore citizenship in 2005 to become an American. So we defend him, our fellow American citizen, against tyrants.

Monday's charge stems from his criticism of a recent legal proceeding at which Lee Kuan Yew, Singapore founding father and present day petty tyrant, and his son, Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong, testified in a defamation case the two filed against an opposition party. Justice Belinda Ang Saw Ean presided.

Court documents say that Nair insulted the judge when he wrote in his blog that Ang was "prostituting herself during the entire proceedings, by being nothing more than an employee of Mr Lee Kuan Yew and his son and carrying out their orders."

This charge replaces the initial charge alleging Nair had sent the disparaging remarks to his lawyer, Chia Ti Lik, in an email. That charge was proved false. In addition to the charge filed Monday, Nair was charged last Thursday with an accusation that he said that Singapore judges are "corrupt."

If convicted, the 58 year old Nair faces a fine of $5,000(3,630USD) and up to one year in a Singapore prison. For now, Nair is free on bond in Singapore, vowing to fight the charges.

In a Friday, May 30 post, Nair reviews the days court proceedings. If you think that only Nair is the subject of the Singaporean dictator Lee Kuan Yew's ill temper, the tyrant states plainly from the witness box that he will sue anyone whom his regime can identify.

I repeat the threat that Lee Kuan Yew had made on day two of the show trial during the last 3 days in the High Court. When asked by Dr. Chee whether he will sue those who write on the Internet defamations against him, I mean defamations in the Singaporean sense, his definitive unequivocal answer was that he will sue them. There is no doubt in the Singaporean sense, I have defamed him and his Prime Minister son, not only in my last blog post but in almost all my blog posts since my blog's inception in December 2006.
In today's world even I can be prosecuted by a foreign government, religious body, social group, or individual for what I write in these pages. Mark Steyn, an American citizen, is under indictment in Canada charged with insulting Islam; Kevin of Aussie News and Views has had his blog gutted and shut down because he published articles critical of Kevin Rudd, the Australian Labor party leader and current Prime Minister; the blog Sharia Finance has been shut down for it's honest critique of the financial maneuverings of Islamic financiers in their attempts to control the West's money centers.

Our laws, meant to protect us, are being used to destroy us as a society and civilization. Those of us who attended Sunday school as children, learned to treat others as you would have them treat you. It seeped into the general population as well and we learned the lesson too well.

The Golden Rule is going to get us all killed.

I wonder if he was a member of MASL?

Some are falling hook line and sinker!

No. He was a lawyer who criticized a dictator and a judge. Now he is under indictment for voicing his opinion in a city state that guarantees freedom of speech by Constitution.

The Singapore Constitution also guarantees freedom of assembly. The dictator has decreed that only applies to assemblies of four people or less.

This dictator, Lee Kuan Yew, has also made it a crime to chew gum and urinate in elevators. His control is nearing absolute.

Why does it bother you when you are not staying in Singapore ?

To be clear, the Anonymous above is NOT the usual Anonymous reader here.

This Anonymous is a fool.

What is Nair doing in Singapore if he had to plead for asylum here? He of all people should know that he would be treated this way if he offered himself up to the opposition. He could have said the same thing from here and still be free to write more.

BTW, the golden rule is a good rule. What most people fail to realize is that it works both ways, you are free also to conduct yourself in the manner in which you are treated. Reciprocity is what makes it work. if he treats you in a certain way then he should expect to be treated in the same way.

No problem, Don. The content gives you away. There is is also an Anonymous whose name here is essentially 'Anonymous'. Again the content is the tell.

6/17/2008 08:09:00 AM Anonymous has an address in Singapore and my guess is a member of the state security opperation reaching out to determine who I am so they can sue me. They could just email me.
