Al-Qaida in Iraq al-Masri Captured in Mosul

The Iraq Interior Ministry is saying they have captured Abu Ayyub al-Masri, also known as Abu Hamza al-Muhajir. Al-Masri is the reputed leader of the pathetic group of criminal thugs called al-Qaida in Iraq.

Gen. Abdul-Karim Khalaf said Mosul police were told by an informant that al-Masri would be at a house in Wadi Hajar, Mosul around midnight Wednesday. Mosul police arrived at the appointed time and "arrested one of al-Qaida's leaders at midnight and during the primary investigations he admitted that he is Abu Hamza Al-Muhajir... Now a broader investigation of him is being conducted."

Pentagon sources have yet to confirm the story. Iraqi state television and Arab satellite TV stations are reporting the capture. Ninevah governor Duraid Kashmola is also saying that al-Masri had been arrested.

Hope this gets confirmed. Bill Roggio cautions:
The Iraqi government has a history of announcing the capture of senior al Qaeda leaders, only to have to retract the statements. The Iraqi government had made several claims of wounding, killing and capturing both al Masri and Abu Omar al Baghdadi, the fictitious leader of al Qaeda’s Islamic State of Iraq, several times during 2007. The reports turned out to be false or cases of mistaken identity.

US sppokesguys said today it is a case of mistaken ID. The al-Masri captured has the same name, but is not THE al-Masri.

These mistakes do have a way of causing the real bad guy to show himself. In past cases like this, I've wondered if that wasn't the point. It's work on Zawahiri, bin Laden, Zarqawi, and others. The bad guys tend to have big egos and they apparently don't like being 'dead'.
