Mark Daily: I Hate Bullies
Mark Daily wrote in a blog post the reasons he volunteered to fight this war. His best friend, to whom Mark entrusted his family, told the 1300 people at the memorial service this past Saturday the real reason Mark joined. It was simplicity itself, "I hate bullies." In an e-mail to a fellow soldier, Mark closed with, "Remember: You carry a new world in your heart." In his brief life, Mark Daily wrote alot, read alot, taught alot, and lived alot. "I'm having the time of my life," he would say.
The Black Hawk helicopter slowly circled the field. The pilot's voice barely audible over the thumping of the rotor blades, "Mark Daily! Mark Daily! Mission accomplished!" A twenty-one gun salute fired by seven men in dress uniform, the trumpeting of taps, the skirl of bagpipes playing "Amazing Grace", the flag covering the coffin folded and presented to the grieving widow on behalf of a grateful nation, posthumous awarding of the Purple Heart and Bronze Star. A good man was mourned and laid to rest. The struggle for freedom and liberty goes on. Life goes on.
I was there.
