Huzzahs for Harry
Following in the footsteps and grand traditions many royals before him Prince Harry, 2nd Lieutenant Harry Wales, has volunteered to go to war. London newspapers are reporting the Ministry of Defense has misgivings Harry could become a "trophy target" for the enemy. Harry, who is 3rd in line for the British throne is threatening to resign his commission as a Second Lieutenant if not allowed to accompany his men into harm's way.
After "passing-out" (graduating) Sandhurst Military Academy April 12, the newly commissioned 2nd Lt. Wales joined the Blues and Royals of the Household Cavalry Regiment, serving in an armoured reconnaissance unit. As a troop commander of 11 enlisted men and four light tanks, Wales could see combat in Afghanistan or Iraq. The Ministry of Defense is concerned the celebrity of the Prince could elicit intensified violence endangering not only him, but also his men.
However, Prince Harry is adamant about serving wherever his unit is sent and sharing the risks for God, country, and Grandmother. “If I am not allowed to join my unit in a war zone, I will hand in my uniform,” he told senior officers. An anonymous source close to Harry said, “He will go bananas if he is given special treatment...He doesn’t want to let the rest of the lads and lasses down by opting out.”
